Marcio Freire was one of three Brazilian surfers known as the "Mad Dogs" . Freire also appeared in the 2016 documentary Mad Dogs. Nazaré, which has the largest waves in the world, was the last place Surfer Freire surfed.

Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died while surfing on huge waves in Nazaré on Portugal's central coast. Relief crews managed to bring Freire ashore, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
